I lead the creation of a platform to monitor the sanitary strategy and evaluate the quality of Covid public data. This was a hard task since several government sources coexisted with data that didn't not match.
We created a platform which was fed with daily information from reports and automatic processes of data that the National Government published on the national open data portal. We created our own indexes, offered new approaches and had journalistic findings that were imposed on the local news agenda. Also, multiple pieces were prepared from the analysis of said information evidencing contradictions between data and official discourse, which obliged the Government to make some changes on its strategy.
My role
As the lead in the creation of this platform, my role involved both the strategic direction and hands-on development of a solution to monitor the government's sanitary strategy and assess the quality of COVID-19 public data. I oversaw the integration of daily data updates from various government sources, which often contained inconsistencies.
Impact
The platform was visited by more than 11 MM of users and provided them new insights through custom indexes, leading to critical journalistic findings that challenged the official narrative. These insights not only influenced public discourse but also prompted changes in the government’s strategy. By structuring public data, we empowered a range of users—activists, scientists, and specialists—to make data-driven decisions.
